The Ministry of Interior is one of the pillars of the Somali government. It has existed for 62 years and has been led by 32 ministers to date. Before the collapse, its staff numbered about 8,000 employees.

For 8 years it operated under another name — the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development — after President Siad Barre’s government in 1977 removed functions such as police, security, and prisons. The name and role were restored in 1984.

Beginning of interior administration

  1. May 1956 — first interior administration government formed. Prime Minister: Cabdullahi Ciise Maxamuud; Interior Minister: Xaaji Muuse Boqor (six ministers).
  2. 31 December 1958 — parliamentary elections; in the second government Cabdullahi Ciise Maxamuud was both Prime Minister and Interior Minister.
  3. 1977–1984 — renamed Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development; police, security and prisons functions moved elsewhere.
  4. 1984 — restoration of the name and role of the Ministry of Interior.
