History & List of Ministers
The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation is one of the pillars of the Somali Government. It has been in service for sixty two years, and during that time, thirty ministers have held the position of Minister.
Before the state collapse of 1991, The Ministry had approximately 8,000 employees.
For eight years, The Ministry was working under a different title: ‘The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development’. In 1977, The Ministry was stripped of some of its core delegations including Police, National Intelligence and Custodial Corps before restoration of the same in 1984.
In May 1956, the first Somali government under a trusteeship was formed. The Government, led by Abdullah Isa Mahmoud as Prime Minister, had only six ministries and Hajii Musa Boqor served as the Minister of The Interior.
In the parliamentary elections that took place on December 31, 1985, Abdullah Isa Mahmoud served as the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior simultaneously.
