The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation (MoIFAR) has successfully concluded a three-day National Conference on Clan Conflicts and Social Cohesion, held in Mogadishu, with the participation of government officials, reconciliation experts, civil society, traditional leaders, and youth representatives from across Somalia.
The conference, officially launched by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, H.E. Abdihakim Ashkir, served as a critical platform to address the root causes of clan conflicts and to foster dialogue on strengthening peace and social cohesion throughout the country.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister Ashkir highlighted the need for genuine cooperation and unity to overcome social divisions and build a peaceful future for all Somalis. The Director General of MoIFAR, Mr. Aidarus Macallin Hassan, outlined the conference’s key objectives and commended participants for their active engagement and contributions.
Over the course of the conference, attendees explored a wide range of issues, including:
•Root causes of inter-clan conflict such as land disputes, governance gaps, and the role of digital media.
•Conflict mapping and analysis of local case studies from regions like Southwest State and Mudug.
•Stakeholder engagement and the role of traditional leaders and community actors in peacebuilding.
•The role of justice, trust-building, and inclusive governance in promoting lasting peace.
Interactive breakout sessions, expert panels, and thematic presentations fostered dynamic discussions around practical approaches to reconciliation and conflict prevention. One of the highlights was a panel moderated by Mr. Farxaan Abdullahi Warsame, Advisor to MoIFAR, featuring insights from high-level officials including:
•Mr. Cayduruus Macallin Xasan, Director General, MoIFAR, FGS.
•Mr. Abdullahi Ali Omar, Deputy Attorney General of Somalia.
•Mr. Mustaf Abdullahi Hassan, Director General, Ministry of Interior, Southwest State.
•Mr. Aweys Shiekh Ahmed, Senior Advisor, MoIFAR
Participants emphasized the critical role of government institutions—at federal, member state, and local levels—in effective conflict resolution and social cohesion strategies.
The final day focused on turning dialogue into action, with key sessions examining law enforcement’s role in conflict management and strategies to build consensus among stakeholders.
The conference was officially closed by the State Minister of MoIFAR, Hon. Sadad Aliyow, who praised the rich discussions, practical recommendations, and collective commitment to peace. He extended appreciation to all participants and stakeholders, including representatives from the Federal Government, Federal Member States, Banadir Regional Administration, civil society organizations, and MoIFAR staff.
