On 4th November 2023, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi opened the workshop for the Enumerators of Conflict Mapping in the Banadir Region. This event was organized by the Banadir Regional Administration and attended by reconciliation experts, actors and partners.
In his official remarks, H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi talked about the importance of conflict mapping as each region has unique conflict triggers that require unique solutions on the road to peace building and reconciliation.
This was followed by the acting Governor of the Banadir Regional Administration, Hon. Isse Mohamud Gure who stated that land disputes are the main conflict triggers in Banadir, adding that this training is a step towards finding lasting solutions to the recurring conflicts in the region. And the Banadir Regional Administration’s Stabilization and Reconciliation Coordinator Ahmed Mohamed Asair, talked the importance of proper data collection in the process of mapping conflicts in Banadir.
Discussions led by Subject Matter Expert and Conflict Navigator Specialist Ms. Ilhan Gassar covered the process of conflict mapping as well as the scope of data collection and data analysis methods. And Mr. Arnold Njogu from Surge Data Hub who took participants through the principles and methods of data collection when it comes to conflict mapping.
UNDP Somalia’s Amjad Bhatti talked about the objective of the Somali Conflict Navigator, which is to have a scientific methodology to map the structural drivers of conflicts across the country.
The workshop covered many other presentations, group discussions and panel discussions before being brought to an official close on 7th November 2023 by the Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation Mr. Aidarus M Hassan.
