On September 16, 2023, The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia joined government representatives and international partners at the 1st Somali National ID Conference.
“Today marks a great day for Somalia as we finally lay the foundations of a reliable national identification system recognized worldwide.” We have data privacy laws and regulatory structures to protect residents. This landmark will improve services, boost the private sector, create jobs, and stabilize our nation.”
– H.E Hamza Abdi Barre, Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia and from the frontlines of Mudug, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi gave the keynote speech at the 1st Somali National ID Conference where he stressed on the importance of the National ID in providing government services and countering the khawarij and other anti-peace groups while contributing to recovery and stabilization.
“A National ID card is not just a piece of plastic, it represents access to essential services, security, healthcare, education, elections, and economic opportunities.”

Mr. Abdulwali Abdullah, Director General of the National Identification and Registration Authority, in a technical presentation explained the process and importance of the National ID card.
The two-day conference was brought to a close the following day by Hon. Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, the speaker of the House of Representatives, where in his closing remarks, he reiterated the importance of the National ID as a service delivery tool.
