Ministry of Interior Launches SINAAN Project to Strengthen Urban Development and Climate Resilience in Somali Cities

In Mogadishu, the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation officially launched the SINAAN Project.

SINAAN is a flagship initiative aimed at strengthening urban development, enhancing climate resilience, and improving service delivery across Somali cities.

The launch event opened with welcoming remarks by the Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Mr. Aidarus Moallim Hassan.

He highlighted the importance of coordinated urban development, strong partnerships, and inclusive service delivery, and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with Federal Member States, local governments, and development partners to ensure Somali cities are resilient, well planned, and responsive to citizens’ needs.

The DT Global Africa Managing Director delivered remarks outlining the objectives of the SINAAN Programme, emphasizing the value of strong partnerships and DT Global’s commitment to supporting sustainable and inclusive urban development in Somalia.

Officials from the Federal Member States also addressed the event, sharing perspectives on urban development priorities and stressing the need to strengthen local government capacity to improve service delivery in Somali cities.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. Bashir Mohamed Jama underscored the importance of climate resilience and reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s commitment to advancing climate resilient development nationwide.

The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Charles King, noted that Somalia is the most urbanized country in East Africa and is experiencing rapid urbanization at a time when the impacts of climate change are increasingly severe. He highlighted the critical climate and environmental challenges facing the country and emphasized the importance of integrated urban planning and climate resilient development.

Closing the event, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, H.E. Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh emphasized the central role of well-planned and resilient cities in Somalia’s recovery.

He highlighted the need to strengthen urban infrastructure, improve service delivery, and enhance climate resilience, while underscoring the importance of close coordination between the Federal Government, Federal Member States, local authorities, and development partners.
