Mogadishu 07 Mar2024; Federal Ministers and heads of United Nations Humanitarian Agencies this morning gathered in Mogadishu for a meeting chaired by the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.
The Ministers of Ports and Marine Transport, Livestock, Water and Energy, Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources all attended this meeting which discussed the humanitarian situation in Somalia. As well as the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA).
The United Nations delegation was led by the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator of OCHA Ms. Joyce Msuya, Ms. Beth Bechdol who is the Deputy Director-General of FAO and accompanied by the DSRSG of UNSomalia Mr. George Conway.
“In recent years, climate-related shocks, mainly drought and flooding, have increased in frequency and intensity, aggravating humanitarian needs and undermining resilience at the household and community levels” H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.
“As we reinstated the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the FGS intends to strengthen coordination and work with state and local authorities to reach the most vulnerable people, especially in hard-to-reach areas.” H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.
“We urge international partners to channel more resources to government and local actors to strengthen the capacity to address both immediate needs and medium- and long-term resilience building” H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.
