MoIFAR meets to discuss the new National Electoral Model

 

The Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, today held a meeting with the ministry’s directors and senior advisors to discuss Somalia’s Electoral Model as agreed by the National Consultative Council. And the role of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation in the implementation of this model. Bellow are the key points

 

🔹There will be a national electoral commission which will be in charge of all elections, Federal, State and others.

🔹 Starting next year, there will be a one person, one vote election held every five years.

🔹 The new agreement establishes a single constituency, proportional representation closed list electoral system.

🔹 The Premier post will be abolished and replaced with a Presidential system where the President and Vice President are elected directly by the people on a single ticket.

🔹 Only two political parties will compete democratically for the people’s vote.

🔹 A unified election schedule has been established for regional elections. The first popular local council elections nationwide, including Banadir, Mogadishu, will take place on June 30, 2024.

🔹Regional parliaments and regional leadership elections will take place on November 30, 2024.
