On 2nd October 2022, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation His Excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi joined Mogadishu’s Mayor and Governor of Banadir Hon Yussuf Hussein Jim’ale (Madale) and other civil registration stakeholders at the national civil registration and vital statistics enhancement workshop.

His Excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, mentioned in his introductory remarks that one of the Somali federal government’s goals is to reactivate the civil registration system. The Ministry is working on drafting regulations that will govern the execution of the national civil register restoration strategy, as well as strategies to enhance collaboration among diverse stakeholders and to develop an electronic civil registration program. 

“Civil registration services should be available at all levels of government and registration needs to be in line with international standards, knowing where we are at is important”, His Excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi.

At this week’s National Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Improvement Workshop in Mogadishu, Ms Violet Kinuthia from the UN Economic Commission for Africa presented Somali’s progress in the field and current challenges and opportunities.

On the other hand, Mr Abdikani Mohamed Wehliye, Director of the Civil Registration Department, in the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, highlighted the importance of civil registration and summarized the outcomes of the Stakeholder Consultative Workshop on Improving the CRVS System in Somalia.

On 5th October, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, His excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi wrapped off a four-day workshop on Improving Somalia’s CRVS System. During the closing ceremony of the National Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Improvement Workshop, His Excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi unveiled plans to introduce an electronic national registration system that is in line with international standards.

His Excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi further stated, “We will conduct a national conference in early December to adopt the civil registration legislation, which will then be passed on to the governing councils for implementation,” adding that “an electronic program will be devised.”

 

 

In Conclusion, The Minister of the Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, His Excellency Ahmed Mo’allim Fiqi, urged civil registration actors to play their part in implementing this program.
